Grade 1 Math Class News!

In November, we are starting Unit 2A will be learning about measurement.  Students will be able to estimate and measure length in inches; select an appropriate tool including rulers, clocks, calendars, and scales to measure a specific attribute; and finally solve problems using nonstandard measurement concepts and procedures.

Grade 2 Math Class News!

Ms. Fagel and Ms. Fioritto’s second grade math students are beginning their second unit in math; geometry.  In this unit we will learn attributes of plane and solid figures and different ways to classify these shapes. We will also study congruency and symmetry.

Grade 3 Math Class News!

Third grade math students accomplished a great deal in Unit 1 and are now beginning to work on Unit 2.  Unit 2 focuses on linear measures.  Students use knowledge of standard measures as they convert between inches, feet and yards and explore a variety of measurement problems.  In the second half of Unit 2, children explore relationships between perimeter and area.  We are all very proud of the great work these kids are producing!

Grade 4 Math Class News!

Greetings from the 4th grade math team! We have finished our very long Unit One and are now moving into Unit Two. In this unit we will concentrate on learning our multiplication and division fact families, listing factors and multiples of numbers, and noticing how multiplication and division are relevant to our daily lives. We will also study algebra, patterns, and functions. We will solve for unknown variables and simplify numeric expressions.

How you can help: Do some regular “times table” drill and practice with your child. There are many web sites that can help, including www.mathfactcafe.com.   Need more information?
Go to http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/math/, click on Elementary School, and follow the link to 4th grade Unit Two. As always, if you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher.

 5 Math News!

As we move into colder weather, the grade five math students are moving on from Unit 1 into Unit 2. In mid-October, the students worked hard to review the concepts covered in the first unit. The students were well-prepared to complete their Unit 1 Assessment.   Thank you for your support at home with the review homework!

Now, we have made great headway into Unit 2.  We’ve discussed various attributes of polygons, including identifying congruent sides and angles, recognizing types of polygons, calculating area, and the determining the measure of interior angles.  As November begins, we are moving into study of three-dimensional figures, circles, and angles.  We can supply protractors and compasses at school, but it will soon become necessary that students have protractors and compasses at home to complete homework.

We are looking forward to this unit and to your continued support at home in developing a strong mathematical foundation for your child!

Math 6 and 7 News!

In Math 6, we are currently about a half way through Unit 2A, decimal operations and applications.  We have been looking at problems using decimals in real-world settings that require computations, converting between units in the metric system, and estimating and rounding decimals.  The rest of Unit 2A will continue using and applying decimals and how it will help in the real world.  We will be moving into Unit 2B shortly as we study decimal and fraction connections and applications.  There will be a Unit Assessment for Unit 2AB in the middle-end of November.

In Math 7, students are continuing to work hard.  Students have recently completed their Unit 1 re-assessments and parent reports will come home shortly.  Students have started their work on Unit 2.  At this point, students are able to write numbers in exponential and scientific notation.  Currently, students are learning to evaluate expressions.  Then, they will move to writing one and two step equations and applying their knowledge of order of operations.  The final part of this unit will involve comparing, ordering and describing integers.  Please encourage students to set up appointments to see me if they need extra help.  Also, please encourage your student to devote extra time studying everyday.  Quiz every Wednesday or Thursday.
