News

Dear Ashburton Families,

The purpose of this letter is to inform you that Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has initiated new requirements for the 2016-2017 school year regarding volunteering in schools. There is now a mandatory child abuse and neglect prevention training for all volunteers, and all volunteers must complete this module prior to volunteering in an MCPS school.  Volunteers are defined to include parents/guardians and other family members, as well as other members of the community, who donate their time and energy to support the students of Montgomery County, subject to the provisions set forth in MCPS Regulation IRB-RA, Volunteers in Schools.  Volunteering also includes chaperones on field trips, supporting in the lunch room or on the playground, and working in any capacity in the school.

All volunteers must complete online training on the prevention, recognition, and reporting of child abuse and neglect.  Volunteers may access the training, “Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect: for Volunteers and Contractors,” which may be accessed by visiting the “Child Abuse and Neglect” page of the MCPS website.  The link for the training can be found at the link here: www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/childabuseandneglect . We have also added a direct link from our school web site for your convenience.  Volunteers will receive an email confirmation to verify their completion of the online training module. Please either forward this confirmation to Andrea Gillespie, Andrea_S_Gillespie@mcpsmd.org, our Volunteer Liaison, or provide a copy of the confirmation to the front office to verify completion of the online training module. This must be done before volunteering in the school or at a school sponsored activity, such as a field trip.  Ashburton will create and maintain a database of who has completed the training and notify your child’s classroom teacher.

We know that this is an additional step and we want this in no way to discourage you from continuing to volunteer at Ashburton. Rather, this additional step continues to ensure that our students, staff and visitors are safe and protected while at Ashburton. Given that this is a transition countywide, we are taking some additional steps here at Ashburton to ease the transition.

On September 15, prior to “Back to School Night”, we will provide a session for all parents/guardians who wish to attend. More information will be forthcoming about this session.

We have set up a “Volunteer Station” in the main office where you may come by and complete the module when it works best for your schedule, during school hours.

You may, of course, complete the module on your own in the comfort of your home by accessing the link above.

We thank you in advance for your flexibility and understanding during this transition. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. As we receive any updates from MCPS regarding this transition, we will communicate them.  I look forward to your involvement at Ashburton for another successful school year!

Sincerely,

Greg Mullenholz
