The Argyle Magnet Middle School Men of Distinction Leadership Development Program was developed several years ago to support male students who exhibited strong leadership potential.
The goals of the program are to create a climate of optimism, to cultivate leadership skills, to expose students to cultural activities outside of their communities, and to model responsible behavioral choices and interactions with others.
The mentees participate in community events, attend professional sporting events, and visit local colleges throughout the area. There are approximately 35 mentees in the program and 7 mentors.
The program operates on the first and third Thursdays of each month. The first half hour is dedicated to tutoring students in their academics and the last 45 minutes is designed interactive activities where mentees engage and reflect on important life skills.
Once a month, a guest speaker presents to the group providing words of encouragement on topics such as strategies to succeed in life, goal seeking, making right choices, rewards of a good education, etc.
