Two Travilah fifth grade students received the Comptroller of Maryland's Ribbon of Excellence in Art. The student's artwork was displayed in the halls of the Treasury Building in Annapolis, Maryland this spring. Selected semi-annually by the Maryland State Department of Education, the artwork is enjoyed by visitors to the building and the employees of the Comptroller and the Treasurer of the State of Maryland. Congratulations to Anna and Jacqueline and their art teacher Mrs. Barnhart!

Poetry Readings for parents were held in many third and fourth grade classes in June. The following samples are from Mrs. Sturm's third grade class. With help from parent Colleen Aycock, Ph.D., students worked in small groups and made torn-paper poems throughout the year. They act as a memory book, from sniper and war to Harry Potter and math.

Loss of Lives for No reason
by Elise T.

It's not fair!
I wrote questions in a book,
Three pages,
What did he want?
How many people have to die?
The main question was Why?
Why did he kill us?
Why would a 17 year-old do this?

I dreamed he would be caught,
I wanted him to go straight to jail,
It was funny that he was sleeping
In the car when he was caught,
My dream came true.

Code Blue
by Angella K.

There was a safety code:
A policeman stayed outside our school,
The doors were locked,
The windows shades were down,
We couldn't go outside,
We were crammed into the library.
Instead of concentrating on math
I prayed that the sniper would be caught.

My friends were afraid,
The police were afraid,
My mom said I was safe at school,
But I was still afraid.

I didn''t want to hear the news,
It meant another blue day.

Devasting Attacks
by Sam A.

It felt like everybody in America was holding their breath.

Sad
Devasting
Loss of lives
Crying families
Many Moms and Dads died

I was worried about my Dad
I would tell the killer to get out of our world
My Mom said I was safe at school
But I didn't feel safe there
My Dad would want to die with his child
He would not leave us alone

When they caught the snipers everyone exhaled

Columbia's 7 Stars
by Kelsey M.

It was
Fun, cool and exciting
Exploring beyond earth.
It must have been
Amazing
Looking down on earth,
On their country,
In a spaceship.

Suddenly,
The heat shields
Exploded
Into the dark,
Like a meteor,
A blast of fire
Shooting with the stars.

Columbia
Exploded,
Disappearing
Into the atmosphere.
Brave heroes
Who will never come back to earth,
Who will stay in the stars forever.

This Year There Was A War
by Michael G.

This year there was a war
Over deadly weapons.
America went to war against Iraq.
200,000 military troops built
Fort after fort.
They settled camps to
Prepare for the attack.
Then
Army troops camouflaged into colors of the trees and ground
Tanks launched missles and other deadly weapons
On the plains of Iraq,
Also hospitals and apartments.
Cities were destroyed.
Torture chambers were destroyed, enemies fled, prisoners were
Freed.
Just like the war started, it ended,
Quickly.
Saddam Hussein's statue was destroyed
American troops were captured, many injured, some were killed.
War is deadly
For both sides.

The Rodents who Dreamed About Chess
by Allen L.

There once was a hamster who loved to play chess;
He was known as the best!
A lemming came to the game when he heard of his fame.
They started to play...
The game got so boring they fell asleep,
And in their dream they came upon a heap
Of bedding, a board of red and black.
One went left,
the other right.
Two knights appeared in the night
Surrounding the hamster who went to the right.
Coming from the other side
They saw the twins of capybaras
Who were trying to find out who would win.
The king and the queeen,®eady for a new regime,
Attacked the twins of the rats. Then the knight rats retreated.
The diagonal mole bishops came to attack,
To the left and the right they made a call on the knights,
Checkmate.

Harry Potter
by Kyle C.

Magic trains that take you to
A private school
Where you will see...

Wizards and wands casting spells,
Brooms and bats and flying balls,
Ghosts that are nice and ghosts that whine,
diaries that take you back in time.

Evil students and
Snakes with fangs,
Secrets hidden
Far away.

Art
by Neil W.

Art is writing,
Carving and drawing --
Thousands of years of art on the walls.
Ancient letters were first pictures in
Caves:
Maps,
Directions to food and water,
To villages now destroyed by hail, rain, enemies, and time;
Pictures of war,
Pictures of snakes, jaguars, and soldiers.
Writing is history.

Math Words
by Philip N.

Is math a noun?
  A subject in school,
  Brain work,
  X times Y.
Or is it a verb?
  Do you do it?
  Add this,
  Subtract that,
  Solve it.
The problem is:
Is it both?
  The answer is...
  Answer this.
