Interested in Poetry?
Take part in Shakespeare's Sisters: Five Centuries of Poetry by Women a 10 week seminar at the Folger Shakespears Library and meet a diverse group of poetry lovers in grades 10-12 from across the DC area. January 13-March 17, 2010, Wednesdays, 4-6pm, FREE(upon acceptance of application). Read and discuss poems by British and American women poets from the mid-16th century to the present and write and share poems of your own. 2009-2010 Being an American Essay Contest NOW OPEN!
The largest high school essay contests in the country is back, asking students to answer the question, "What civic value do you believe is most essential to being an American?" Teachers can begin submitting their students' essays now. For more information about the contest, go to www.beinganamwerican.org.

2010 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Essay Contest
The JFK Library Foundation invites US high school students to write an original essay on the political courage of a US elected official. The first place winner receives $10,000. In addition they will receive an expense-paid trip to Boston to meet Caroline Kennedy and tour the library.

NCTE/Norman Mailer Writer’s Colony High School Writing Award for Creative Nonfiction
Norman Mailer produced extraordinary works in many genres, including the category of this year’s award: creative nonfiction. Students who will be seniors in fall 2010 may submit work in any of the many subgenres of creative nonfiction: memoir or autobiography, essay, literary journalism, profiles of people or places, and so on. Whatever its type, the best work will be true material presented with compelling literary merit. This year submissions will be accepted between February 1 and May 1. The top winner will receive a $5,000 cash award, with plaques and citations also awarded to national finalists and semifinalists. For more information please go to the NCTE website @ www.ncte.org. |
