It makes me feel happy to see the smile of my student when she is reading. —Volunteer Tutor

I have thoroughly enjoyed my weekly tutoring sessions with my student. What comes out of this is more than I expected. —Volunteer Tutor

We usually start by looking at the pictures together. I listen to him read. I listen to see if he reads correctly and check off his progress. If he gets to a word he doesn’t know, I ask him to stop. I say the word and then I ask him to repeat it. —Volunteer Tutor

Greg used to have trouble paraphrasing what he had just read. But now, Greg is doing great. He really likes coming and learning to read. —Volunteer Tutor

The training has taught me how to help any child with reading. —Volunteer Tutor

Parents

The Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network has given my son the reading skills necessary to succeed as a student. We were fortunate to be part of the program this year. I was surprised when Will’s second grade teacher expressed her concern about his reading comprehension. I assumed that if a child could read the words he could understand what he was reading; I was certainly wrong. The school matched Will with a volunteer that comes every week and uses the Reading Together™ materials. This was a perfect solution. The program was a mechanism to help Will understand the fundamentals of reading comprehension and build-up his confidence.
During these past few months Will looked forward to reading with his tutor. The tutor workbook is an outstanding guide to each lesson and the book selections are terrific. We received communication each week about the lesson and are very grateful for the willingness of the tutor to work with our child. The one-on-one attention sure made a difference for Will. Now, Will can’t wait to read with us at home and he is proud of his reading. Even his second grade teacher is reporting improvement in Will’s reading abilities. There is no doubt that participation in the Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network has elevated his skills. Thank you for providing this program. —Parent

My son enjoys reading. His teacher has commented that his comprehension has greatly improved. Now he is asking me… “Mom, when are we going to read?” —Parent

My son’s tutor has given him the reading skills necessary to succeed. The program was a mechanism for both of us to understand the fundamentals of reading comprehension and how to formulate questions to help a child improve his understanding of written text. … Now, Will is in the third grade and reading above grade level! There is no doubt in my mind, that it was the Reading Together™ program that elevated his skills. The program also increased his interest in reading, and he now looks forward to our regular trips to the local library. —Parent

Daniel learned a lot of good things from this program. Now he can read better and predict what will happen in a story. Now he loves to read and buy new books. For Daniel and myself, everything was very good. —Parent

This program has provided one-on-one time and attention to many second grade students that otherwise is not available. The self-esteem factor is of equal value to the improved reading skills. The volunteers give these children a gift.

There is a great improvement in the second graders’ retelling. The students in the program began sharing these comprehension skills with other students in their classroom. They seem to enjoy reading more.” —Second Grade Teacher
