“Reading is the
door we have to open for every child. We know we
don’t have enough time to do it in the school
day.
We have to involve parents and the community.”
—Dr. Jerry D.
Weast, Superintendent of Schools
Research shows one-on-one tutoring is the most effective
way to reach children who are struggling in the classroom.
Focused attention in a nurturing environment allows
below-proficient students to take risks and grow academically,
socially and emotionally.
The Ruth Rales Comcast Kids Reading Network uses the
Reading Together™ instructional program. This
scientifically research-based program:
- Accelerates reading achievement
- Aligns to the MCPS curriculum standards and the
Maryland Voluntary State Curriculum
- Uses volunteers from the community to tutor individual
students in reading
- Builds vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension in
reading as well as confidence.
The program is flexible enough to use with parent
tutors, adult mentors, or cross-age tutors in a variety
of settings: before, during or after school and in
schools or community settings.
Whatever the implementation, scripted lessons, tutor
training, and a proven delivery system make it a proven
solution for intervening with at-risk Grade 2 students.
Grade 2 students are selected based on individual
reading assessment as well as parent requests. Students
are able to read and decode, but may be struggling
with reading fluency, comprehension, and critical thinking.
Tutors volunteer from a variety of school and community
resources.
- Parents or other family members tutoring their
own child at home
- Adult volunteers can tutor a child at school
- Cross-age volunteers who are older students can
tutor a student at school.
- Desire to help a child.
- Commitment to tutor a second grade student one
hour a week for 30 lessons.
- Ability to read at a fourth grade or higher reading
level.
- Willingness to attend two 3-hour training sessions
a year.
