Laura Sampedro, a 12th grade student at Springbrook High School, was sworn in as the 22nd student member of the Board of Education at a ceremony yesterday evening [July 1, 1999]. The swearing-in took place at the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville.
Sampedro, who is the first Hispanic student member of the Board, was elected by 79.5 percent of the 46,045 secondary students who cast ballots in the April election conducted by the Montgomery County Region of the Maryland Association of Student Councils. She is an honor roll student and has served as a representative to the Student Government Association since eighth grade. She is also a staff writer for her school newspaper, Springbrook Blueprint, and a member of the concert band.
During her campaign, Sampedro expressed strong support for providing a safe and effective learning environment, supported by programs such as peer mediation.
Sampedro succeeds Geonard Butler, a recent graduate of Springbrook High School. Butler will attend Florida A & M University in the fall.
