MCPS Statement on the Arrest of Former Employee Michael Riley

May 1, 2018
Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) has been made aware of the arrest of Michael Riley, a former teacher and athletic director who retired in April, 2010. Mr. Riley has been charged with child abuse and molestation. These charges stem from allegations that, during the 1984-85 school year, Mr. Riley had a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student when he was a teacher at Rockville High School.

MCPS is fully cooperating with the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) on this matter.

Mr. Riley was hired by MCPS in 1979 and retired in 2010. During this time he was a teacher at Rockville and Richard Montgomery high schools, and served as athletic director at Poolesville and Clarksburg high schools.

Given that the alleged incidents occurred several decades ago, no letter will be sent to current families.

MCPD is asking that anyone with information helpful to the investigation call the Special Victims Investigations Division of the Montgomery County Police Department at 240-773-5400.
