Six MCPS Schools Receive Maryland Green Schools Award

April 26, 2018

Beall, Georgian Forest, Kensington Parkwood, Monocacy, Wayside and Weller Road elementary schools have been awarded the 2018 Maryland Green Schools Award.

The program encourages educational opportunities for preK-12 schools that increase awareness and understanding of environmental relationships that impact public health and the local community. The Maryland Green Schools Program is a nationally recognized program that started in 1999. Maryland Green Schools demonstrate a continuous effort to integrate sustainable environmental practices, environmental education curriculum, professional development and community engagement into the culture of their schools. This certification signifies that these schools have made a commitment to developing stewards of the earth and reducing environmental impact.

There are 87 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) participating in the Green Schools program. The program is aligned with Chesapeake Bay Watershed Agreement 2014 goals and supports Maryland State Department of Education graduation requirements and standards.

The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE) will hold an award celebration to honor the schools at its 8th Annual Maryland Green School Youth Summit, May 31 at Sandy Point State Park.
