Latino Family Empowerment Participants to be Recognized

June 7, 2002
Latino parents who have been participating in a family involvement program during the past school year will be recognized for their commitment at a June 15 ceremony. The ceremony, to be held from 10 a.m.-noon in the Carver Educational Services Center cafeteria, will include presentations by several of the parents who participated in the program regarding their educational involvement projects.

More than 100 Latino parents have taken time out of their schedules to spend one Saturday each month participating in Conquista Tus Sueños (Realize Your Dreams): Latino Family Empowerment Program. The program is sponsored by MCPS’ Department of Family and Community Partnerships and the Division of ESOL/Bilingual Programs.

The 10-session program was conducted in Spanish primarily by community leaders Carlos Devis and Fernando Cruz-Villalba and invited guest speakers. Latino parents were provided the opportunity to gain greater understanding of how to become more actively engaged in supporting the educational achievement of their children and their school programs. The sessions included opportunities for parents to practice skills in effective communication, problem-solving and educational leadership.
