Students Receive Free Backpacks and Supplies

August 30, 2001
Office Depot has donated backpacks filled with school supplies to 500 students attending Broad Acres Elementary School in Silver Spring. Backpacks were handed out during a special open house at the school on August 31 prior to the opening of school on September 4.

Joining officials from Office Depot for presentation of the backpacks and supplies to students were Superintendent Jerry D. Weast, Board of Education Vice President Kermit Burnett, Board Member Patricia O'Neill, and County Executive Douglas Duncan.

Nearly 87 percent of the students at Broad Acres Elementary School qualify for Free and Reduced-price Meals, a measure of poverty.

Last year, Office Depot donated backpacks to students at New Hampshire Estates Elementary School in Silver Spring. For more information about the Office Depot community involvement program, contact Bill Morris, Office Depot regional director, at 1-800-890-4914.
