An Additional Fifteen Students Win National Merit College Scholarships

June 5, 2001
Fifteen MCPS high school seniors have won college-sponsored National Merit Scholarships, bringing the total number of Merit scholars in the school system to 39 so far this year.

The local scholars are among 33 winners from Maryland and 4,300 winners nationally who were selected to receive the scholarships financed by colleges and universities. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the financing institution.

Previously, 17 MCPS students won $2,500 awards funded by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), and seven won corporate-sponsored scholarships.

The MCPS college-sponsored scholarship winners, intended career fields and sponsoring institutions are:

- Winston Churchill High School: Debra S. Cutler, biochemistry, University of Maryland; Eli N. Miller, political science, University of Maryland

- Walter Johnson High School: Micha Elsner, computer science, University of Rochester

- Walt Whitman High School: Rachel M. Dellon, creative writing, Johns Hopkins University

- Montgomery Blair High School: Benjamin J. Aurich, physics, University of Maryland; Min-Shue A. Chen, biomedical engineering, Johns Hopkins University; Austin B. Cox, engineering, University of Maryland; Kerry R. Devlin, Carleton College; Roman W. Goldstein, biomedical engineering, Washington University

- Richard Montgomery High School: David O. Chee, biochemistry, Rice University; Justin D. Galen, international business, Washington University; Leslie C. Jones, business economics/accounting, University of Maryland; David P. Levitus, politics, New York University; Stephanie S. Lin, fashion/graphic design, New York University; Randa M. Tantawi, writing, Boston University

The winners were chosen from among Merit Program finalists who will attend those institutions by officials of the more than 200 private and public colleges and universities who sponsored scholarships.

Students attained finalist status based on criteria such as exceptional performance on standardized tests and in the classroom, recommendations from school officials and a statement of goals and interests. The finalists were selected from about 16,000 semifinalists announced last fall. MCPS had 122 semifinalists in the program.

The NMSC will announce additional winners of college-sponsored Merit Scholarships in July.
