Nancy J. King was elected President of the Board of Education for a one-year term. Kermit V. Burnett, the current vice president of the Board of Education, was re-elected as vice president of the Board for a one-year term. The election occurred during the Board's regularly scheduled business meeting on Tuesday, December 12, 2000.

Mrs. King was first elected to the Board in 1994 and previously has served as its president and vice president. She has served on the Board Audit Committee and is chairperson of the Subcommittee on Long-Range and Strategic Planning.

In addition, Mrs. King has served as the Board's legislative representative to the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE) and has been a member of various MABE committees. She is a former member of the Montgomery Village Foundation Board of Directors and remains actively affiliated with several civic organizations. She is a past president of the Montgomery County Council of PTAs.

Mrs. King is the vice president of a family-owned consulting engineering firm in Maryland. She is married and has three daughters and two grandchildren all former or present students in Montgomery County Public Schools.

Mr. Burnett was appointed by the Board of Education in December 1998 to fill the term of the vacant district 4 seat and was elected to a four-year term in November 2000. He is the current vice president and was re-elected vice president of the Board by acclamation.

Mr. Burnett serves on the Long-Range and Strategic Planning Subcommittee. He has been an active volunteer for the Montgomery County Public Schools. His leadership roles include coordinator for the John F. Kennedy Cluster and membership on the Board of Education Technology Usage Advisory Committee. He has chaired the Parent Advisory Committee for Title I. He also has been co-PTA president of John F. Kennedy High school and is a member of the Benjamin Banneker Honors Math and Science Society.

Mr. Burnett has a degree in education from Howard University and a master's degree in management from Webster University. He is the parent of an MCPS graduate and of a current student in the school system.
