Media Advisory: Thousands of Grade 2 Students to Attend Strathmore Concerts

November 17, 2014

More than 11,000 second grade students from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) will experience classical music this week as the Music Center at Strathmore hosts the annual Strathmore Student Concerts. Students will fill the 2,000-seat concert hall in droves for seven concerts over four consecutive days (November 18-21) for this hallmark Strathmore education program.

The concerts by the National Philharmonic, led by Music Director and Conductor Piotr Gajewski, include music by a variety of composers. Through the performance, students learn about the four families of instruments that make up the orchestra. With brief explanations of the works supported by images projected above the stage, the concerts reinforce musical concepts students are learning in school. Students learn about the musical selections prior to attending the Strathmore Student Concerts. The second grade students participate in the National Philharmonic’s performance of “The Berry Pickers Song” from Villa-Lobos’ The Little Train of Caipira.

The second grade student concerts represent a $124,000 investment in the community. In October, Strathmore hosted student concerts for fifth grade students centered on Blues music. This brings the total investment by Strathmore Hall Foundation, Inc. and its sponsors—GEICO, Jordan Kitt’s Music, Capital One Bank and the Paul M. Angell Family Foundation—to $248,000.
