Naming Committee for New Downcounty Elementary School Meets April 19

April 17, 2012
The naming committee for a new elementary school in the Downcounty Consortium will meet on Thursday, April 19. The meeting will take place at 7 p.m. in the media center of Oakland Terrace Elementary School, 2720 Plyers Mill Road, in Silver Spring.

The Board of Education began the naming process for the school—known as Downcounty Consortium Elementary School #29— in February. The Board suggested four names for consideration—Mary McLeod Bethune, Charles Gilchrist, Josiah Henson and Flora Singer—and asked that a committee that includes community representatives be charged with recommending a name to the Board. The Board will make the final decision on a name for the school, which will open in August in the McKenney Hills neighborhood.

The committee is chaired by Kyle Heatwole, principal of the new school, and is comprised of parents of students who will attend the school, PTA members and other representatives.

The committee had met previously three times, but two of the meetings were mistakenly not publicly posted. The process is being redone to assure full compliance with the Maryland Open Meetings Act.

The naming of schools is guided by Board of Education policy FFA and
Board regulation FFA-RA.
