Superintendent's Second Book Club Features Author Daniel Pink

January 12, 2012
Superintendent Joshua P. Starr will host his second Book Club discussion on Tuesday, Jan. 31, featuring the book Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, by Daniel Pink. Mr. Pink and others will join Dr. Starr for a discussion of the book and how it relates to teaching and learning.

Drive explores how we motivate ourselves and motivate others, a topic that is extremely important in education,” Dr. Starr said. “I am excited that Dan Pink will join us for this conversation, and I invite the entire MCPS community to participate on January 31.”

The Jan. 31 event will be held at 7 p.m. in the auditorium at Carver Educational Services Center, 850 Hungerford Dr. in Rockville. Parents, staff, students and community members who wish to be part of the studio audience are asked to RSVP to pio@mcpsmd.org. Viewers at home can participate by watching online or MCPS TV and sending questions by Twitter and email.

Joining Dr. Starr and Mr. Pink for the conversation will be Donna Redmond Jones, principal of Rosa Parks Middle School; Kimberly St. John, staff development teacher at Rosa Parks; and Douglas Prouty, president of the Montgomery County Education Association. There also will be time for audience questions and comments.

More than 200 people participated in the first Book Club event, which focused on the book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success, and featured the author, Dr. Carol Dweck, who joined the conversation via Skype.

Dr. Starr’s third Book Club event is scheduled for April 24.
