Nine MCPS Students Named Siemens Competition Semifinalists

Nine Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students have been named semifinalists in the prestigious Siemens Competition in mathematics, science and technology.

The Siemens Competition is the nation’s leading original research competition for high school students. It is sponsored by the Siemens Foundation and is administered annually by the College Board. A total of 2,436 students registered for the 2011-2012 competition, representing 1,541 projects submitted.

There were 317 semifinalists announced today (Oct. 21, 2011) and of the ten semifinalists from Maryland, all but one is from MCPS.

The semifinalists from MCPS are:

·  Pei-Nan Chen, Poolesville High School
·  Arec Jamgochian, Montgomery Blair High School
·  Frederic Koehler, Montgomery Blair High School
·  Huy Lam, Poolesville High School
·  Maureen Lei, Montgomery Blair High School
·  Nina Lu, Montgomery Blair High School
·  Ziyao Wang, Montgomery Blair High School
·  Alan Xie*, Richard Montgomery High School
·  Andrew Zhang, Montgomery Blair High School

The list of 96 regional finalists was also released today. No students from MCPS or the state of Maryland were invited to the regional competition.
