Alan Xie Reelected Student Member of the Board of Education

April 14, 2011
Alan Xie, a junior at Richard Montgomery High School, was elected the 2011-2012 student member of the Montgomery County Board of Education on April 13. Xie, who is currently representing students on the board, is the second student in MCPS history to run for, and win, a second term.

Xie was chosen by more than 72 percent of the secondary students who cast ballots in the election, conducted by the Montgomery County Region of the Maryland Association of Student Councils (MCR). The overall voter turnout was 84.27 percent (64,092 of 76,055 students). All high schools and middle schools submitted election results, along with alternative programs at the Blair G. Ewing Center, Rock Terrace School and the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents (RICA).

Xie defeated Hal Zeitlin, a junior at Winston Churchill High School.

Xie will begin his term as the 34th student member of the Board on July 1st. He has been active in student government for several years. He also has past experience as a delegate to MCR and as a councilmember on the Maryland Association of Student Councils.

In his first term on the Board, Xie has made communication with students a top priority. He said in his position statement: “I value your concerns, suggestions, and ideas, and I’m currently working to increase communication with students through the creation of a centralized SMOB website integrated with Facebook. In this coming year, we’ll work together and fight for the issues that are important to you.”

The student member of the Montgomery County Board of Education votes on all issues that come before the board with the exception of capital and operating budgets, collective bargaining and school boundary decisions.
