School and Office Web Sites Win Best of MCPS Web Awards for 2010

April 23, 2010
Clarksburg High School, Silver Spring International Middle School and Great Seneca Creek Elementary were winners in the 6th annual “Best of MCPS Web” awards this week. The winners were announced during a ceremony on Monday, April 19.

The Best of the MCPS Web awards recognize Montgomery County Public Schools web sites that model best practices in web communications. Nominations for the award were submitted by staff and the community and voted upon by school and office webmasters across the district. The awards and event are sponsored by MCPS Web Services, which is part of the Office of Communications and Family Outreach. Winners receive certificates of recognition and a plaque for their school or office.

The MCPS Web is composed of 200 school web sites and hundreds of office and department sites, which are managed by about 1,300 webmasters. During a typical week, the MCPS Web has more than 1 million page views and more than half a million visits.

The awards ceremony also featured a keynote speech by Jeffrey Brown, a computer science teacher at Damascus High School. Brown teaches web development students and is a national leader in the web standards movement. In his talk, “The State of Web Education,” he discussed the challenges and opportunities of re-structuring education to teach the next generation of web professionals.
