MCPS Celebrates Walk to School Day

October 9, 2008
Montgomery County Public Schools celebrated International Walk to School Day on October 8 as children, parents, teachers and community members in many elementary schools around Montgomery County began the day by walking to school.

Walk to School Day is designed to bring attention to the importance of walking to improve health, finding ways to improve pedestrian safety, and helping to protect the environment from pollution. Twenty-three county schools planned special activities for Walk to School Day this year.

Piney Branch Elementary School in Takoma Park was the focus of a countywide celebration and press conference that was attended by many elected officials, fire and police officers, transportation and health leaders, and other guests. The walk and press conference were followed by a school assembly in the Piney Branch gymnasium. Piney Branch students and staff have taken an active interest in walking as a form of exercise. The school is forming a walking club and planning a five mile walk later in the school year.
