MCPS Celebrates Homegrown School Lunch Week

September 23, 2008
Takoma Park Middle School Helps Launch Homegrown School Lunch Week

Takoma Park Middle School students were joined by local, state, and federal officials; farmers; and nutrition specialists today to launch Maryland’s first-ever Homegrown School Lunch Week, September 22–26, 2008. Participants viewed educational displays and activities and ate a lunch of locally-grown fruits and vegetables with students. The event was designed to help students and others understand the connection between fresh, healthy food and the local farms that grow it.

The Homegrown School Lunch Week, an element of the Jane Lawton Farm to School Program, was created during the 2008 Session of the Maryland General Assembly. The Bill was sponsored by Maryland Senator Jamie Raskin and Delegate Sheila Hixson and was signed into law by Governor Martin O’Malley in May.
