Watkins Mill Junior Elected Student Member of the Board of Education

Watkins Mill High School junior Quratul-Ann Malik has been elected student member of the Board of Education for 2008–2009.

Malik was chosen by 56 percent of the secondary students who cast ballots in the April 30 election, conducted by the Montgomery County Region of the Maryland Association of Student Councils. Eighty-five percent of all eligible middle school and high school students, plus one alternative program (more than 64,000 students) turned out to vote.

Her opponent, Alex Blocker, is a junior at James Hubert Blake High School.

Malik is president of the Watkins Mill Class of 2009 and serves as parliamentarian of the Maryland Association of Student Councils and of the Montgomery County Region. She also is the Watkins Mill coordinator for the Montgomery County Student Parent Advisory Committee.

She will begin her term as the 31st student member of the Board on July 1.
