NEA Honors Kim Oliver for Teaching Excellence

August 8, 2006
Kimberly C. Oliver, kindergarten teacher at Broad Acres Elementary School and 2006 National Teacher of the Year, is one of five recipients of the Horace Mann—National Education Association Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence, presented annually by the Foundation of the NEA.

Oliver will receive an award of $10,000 at the NEA Foundation’s 12th annual Salute to Excellence in Education Gala on Thursday, February 8, 2007, in Washington, D.C. In addition, Broad Acres Elementary School will receive an award of $1,000 in her honor.

The five Horace Mann Award recipients are 2007 national finalists for the NEA Member Benefits—NEA Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence. The winner of this $25,000 award will be announced at the February 8 gala.

Oliver was named Montgomery County Teacher of the Year in April 2005 and was selected Maryland Teacher of the Year last October. She was named National Teacher of the Year in April 2006. She is credited with helping turn around declining test scores at Broad Acres Elementary School, which has the highest poverty rate among MCPS schools, and where nearly 41 percent of the children need instruction in learning English.
