Conference To Focus on Secondary Schools

Student Panel Members Will Share Their Experiences in Specialized Programs

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), in partnership with Montgomery College and the Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education, is sponsoring the second annual conference focusing on middle and high school issues, Secondary School Success ~ Sharpening Our Focus.

The conference, scheduled from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on June 20 at Northwest High School in Germantown, will feature a panel of students who will talk about their experiences in theme- focused programs in MCPS that offer internships and college-level courses.

Willard R. Daggett, president, International Center for Leadership in Education, will present the keynote address, From Good to Great. He will address six challenges schools must tackle to attain excellence and prepare students for success in a changing world. Jerry D. Weast, superintendent of schools, and Freeman A. Hrabowski, III, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, will offer opening remarks. Attendees will include more than 550 school and community leaders with a stake in charting the future for high schools and middle schools in Montgomery County.

Afternoon forums will feature promising practices in 24 breakout sessions. Topic areas include Setting High Expectations and Accountability for Results; Promoting Rigor, Relevancy, and Relationships; and Fostering Transitions through Secondary Education to College and Careers. Presenters include a range of experts from across the nation in addition to those representing MCPS and local postsecondary institutions.
