Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education Joins with Congressman Albert Wynn to Sponsor Program

Montgomery County Business Roundtable for Education (MCBRE) is joining with Congressman Albert Wynn in sponsoring an opportunity for high school students to participate in a program with the Congressional Black Caucus. The students will attend the September 22 session of the Congressional Black Caucus Annual Legislative Conference. The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to interact with African American legislative leaders and discuss important issues. Two students from each of the county’s 24 high schools have been chosen by their school to participate.

The program includes pre- and- postconference activities that will help students get the most out of their experience. Students will choose among approximately ten topics being presented at conference forums and conduct initial research on their topic. Areas for discussion include national health care, strengthening voters’ rights, labor issues in the Black community, and small business opportunities, among others. After attending the forum, students will be responsible for making a presentation on their topic.

Mentors from the law firm of Hogan and Hartson will accompany students during the conference and provide guidance as students participate in a discussion session before attending the forums.

Students will be responsible for a presentation on their topic in the weeks following the conference. The mentors will be available to answer questions and provide support after the conference as students complete their research projects.

Students will complete an attitude survey prior to attending the conference and another survey after completing their project. The brief survey will assess knowledge, familiarity, and interest in government and policy issues before and after they participate in the conference activities.

Later in the fall, students, mentors, and leaders from MCBRE and Montgomery County Public Schools will attend a reception with Congressman Wynn.
