Board Seeks Applicants for District 5 Vacancy

Individuals who live in Board of Education District 5 in eastern Montgomery County are invited to apply for the vacancy created by the resignation of Henry Lee from the Montgomery County Board of Education.

The appointment of an individual to complete the remaining two years of the position's current term will be made by the Board of Education. The appointment process includes a review of submitted applications, personal interviews, voter registration verification, and confirmation of district residency.

Applications must be received on or before November 8, 2004, by 5:00 p.m. Individuals are requested to mail, hand-deliver, e-mail, or fax the documents to the Board of Education. The mailing address in 850 Hungerford Drive, Room 123, Rockville, Maryland 20850. E-mails may be sent to george_margolies@fc.mcps.k12.md.us. The fax number is 301-279-3860. The names and correspondence of all applicants will be available for public review.

Applicants who previously applied when Dr. Lee was appointed, who wish to be reconsidered at this time, need only contact Mr. Margolies by the closing date to advise of their continuing interest.

Individuals wishing to be considered for appointment must submit the following:

· A signed letter expressing the applicant's desire and willingness to serve on the Board of Education as the District 5 representative with a term ending in November 2006;

· A brief record of the applicant's personal history and relevant civic, professional, and employment experience (a resume may suffice);

· A statement attesting to the fact that the applicant is a registered voter of Montgomery County and resides in District 5, providing the home address; and

· Day and evening telephone numbers and e-mail address (if available) where the applicant can be reached.

In addition to a review of applications, the Board of Education's appointment process includes public interviews of finalists. Interviews will be held on Saturday, November 20. The Board's appointment will be made by majority vote in public session immediately following the conclusion of the interviews.

By law, the individual chosen must be a registered voter of Montgomery County and reside within the boundaries of Board of Education District 5. The district includes an area stretching from Silver Spring through Burtonsville, Olney, and Brookeville in eastern Montgomery County.

The precincts that comprise the district are identified in the Annotated Code of Maryland, Education Article, §3-901(f)(3)(viii). The boundaries of the district can be identified by calling the Board of Elections at 240-777-8500. A district map, provided by the Board of Elections, is available at the link below. Individuals who are subject to the authority of the Board of Education, such as an employee of the school system, may not serve as a member of the Board.
