Saturday School Names New Executive Director

Joseph J. D’Amico has been named the new executive director of the George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Academy, Inc., also known as the Saturday School. He will be responsible for the development, administration, and implementation of the Academy’s tutorial and mentoring programs.

Saturday School works in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools to accelerate students’ mastery of core subject matter and to teach successful learning and studying strategies. Participating students in Grades 1 through 12 meet with volunteer tutors on Saturday mornings throughout the school year.

Most recently, D’Amico was senior associate at La Luz Consultants in Silver Spring, responsible for planning, training, and technical assistance programs. From 2000-2003, he served as vice president of the Educational Research Service in Arlington, Virginia. He began his educational career as a junior high school teacher in 1971.

D’Amico is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and received masters degrees from Brandeis University in anthropology and the University of Pennsylvania in education.
