Grade 2 Studies to be Released on Impact of Reforms

May 28, 2003
A press conference will be held Friday, May 30, on the release of three new reports on student performance on the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills (CTBS), with national percentile comparisons. The event is open to the public.

More than 10,000 second grade students took the test, providing a critical assessment benchmark for the school system's comprehensive reforms in early elementary school education -- including curricula improvements, teacher training, new assessments, class size reductions, and expanded full-day kindergarten.

Those reforms began with the kindergarten class of 2000-2001, same class that entered second grade this year and took the CTBS this past March. The studies focus on the effect of those reforms on student achievement in Grade 2.
