Instruction (the taught curriculum)

Development of the curriculum frameworks has been followed by development of Curriculum, Assessment, and Instruction (CAI) Blueprints. The blueprints organize the outcomes of the framework into units of instruction and are intended to serve as a basis for the development of lesson plans.

Currently, the content supervisors are leading the development of 16 instructional guides for implementation in the 2002-2003 school year. The guides will expand upon the information in the blueprints and provide teachers with model lesson plans, assessments, and resources to ensure alignment of the written curriculum with what is actually taught. They include Grades 1-8 mathematics, Grades 1-2 English/language arts, Grades 6-8 English, and Grade 5 social studies. Instructional content specialists are working collaboratively with specialists from special education, ESOL, accelerated and enriched instruction, and technology, as well as with classroom teachers, to develop guides that will provide teachers with the necessary resources to meet the needs of all students.

Also in development and to be included within the instructional guides are assessments that link to instruction. Ongoing classroom assessments will provide teachers with information on the progress each student is making toward mastery of the content expectations. The instructional guides will then provide teachers with strategies to refocus, instruct, accelerate, or re-teach as necessary to ensure that students are progressing.

Development and adjustment of curriculum guides will be ongoing. Priority for any revision will be determined following a cross check of existing units with the revised curriculum framework.
