Detailed information on the Instructional Management System

Instructional Management System (monitoring the curriculum)

An instructional management system (IMS) will provide the necessary tools for teachers, administrators, staff, students, parents, and the entire community to improve teaching, learning and student achievement. When fully implemented, it will affect every school, classroom, teacher, and student. IMS will be a data-rich system that MCPS can use for planning and targeting to make needed improvements in teaching and learning. It will serve as a lens to focus instruction on what we value the most.

An Instructional Management System is critical to our ability to successfully introduce and manage a curriculum based on standards and assessment. Our Call to Action demands systems such as this to reach our goal of a high level of academic achievement for every student in Montgomery County Public Schools.

The Office of Global Access Technology is supporting the Board of Education's new policy on curriculum through the deployment of an Instructional Management System. This document reflects characteristics of systems currently available in the marketplace. The instructional management system MCPS implements may include some or all of the characteristics described in this document. All features of a system such as this would not be implemented simultaneously, but rather phased appropriately taking into consideration training requirements and infrastructure capabiltities.

IMS Timeline

Even though our timeline for implementation is aggressive, we are committed to success. The system will be tested and proven before there is an expectation of use. (Dates coming soon.)

Phase 1 Fact finding and due diligence
Phase 2 Evaluate and select product, establish initial scope
Phase 3 Select schools, trainers, and conduct orientation
Phase 4 Load standards, curriculum, assessment data. Conduct training.
Phase 5 Load student, teacher, course data. Conduct training.
Phase 6 Support and expand scope. Evaluate.
Phase 7 Launch additional ES and MS
Phase 8 Launch remaining ES/MS and high schools

IMS Launch Process

Our process for launching IMS is comprehensive and will assure success. This process will be used each time the use of IMS is expanded.
