Search Engine

The MCPS search engine is a Web crawler that scans Web pages and PDF files, reading both words on the page and hidden code. Establishing links to your page is the best way to get listed. The more links there are to your page, the higher your ranking in the search results.

Optimizing your Content for Search

Optimizing Web Pages

Search results will display the contents of the title as the link:
Montgomery County Public Schools - Board of Education

Optimizing PDF Documents

The best way to have PDFs show up in the search results is to create a page with a link to a PDF (see Webmaster Account form or About the Board of Education)

However, you also want to fill in the "TITLE" and "KEYWORD" fields of a PDF document's "Document Properties" as these are used by the search engine to rank results. Acrobat's menu command is "File → Document Properties → Summary."

Enter keywords separated by commas, without spaces, like this:
directions to schools,directions,school locations

Search results display the contents of the title as the link:
Directions to Montgomery County Public Schools
