How To Become an MCPS Webmaster

Get a Webmaster Account

You need a Webmaster account to receive ftp (file transfer protocol) access to the MCPS web server.

Who can request a webmaster account?
Only a principal or administrator (A&S level supervisor) can request accounts for their school or office. Since the principal or supervisor is ultimately responsible for the content of the school or office site, they must have knowledge of those persons having access to update their sites.

How to request a webmaster account

After Web Services receives the form, we'll create the account.

Know Your Role & Responsibilities

You will receive a username and password as well as a document defining your role and responsibilities as a webmaster (someone with access to the web server). Become familiar with this document and guidelines & policies that guide computer use and web publishing.

Get an HTML Editor & an FTP Program

At the very minimum you will need an HTML editor and an FTP program.

Get Training & Begin Teaching Yourself

Sign up for training and try some free HTML tutorials.

  • Training: Web Services and the Tech Consulting team collaborate to offer hands-on classes in a lab environment.

  • HTML tutorials: Begin experimenting with HTML at your leisure. See Recommended Resources

Grow Your Expertise & Your Site

Web Services offers support and tools to help you and your site improve:

  • Webmaster Conference: Web Services moderates this conference (accessible in Outlook) for MCPS webmasters and others. They trade ideas, problems, and solutions. It’s lively, helpful, professional and fun.

  • Publishing Tools: A suite of tools that help you publish content more easily to your site. There are even tools that require no HTML. A school secretary, for example, could use the Newsbox Publisher to publish school announcements to the Web site.

  • Site Utilities: allow you to perform analysis and your visitors to interact with your site. For example, webmasters can add our Feedback Form to their sites to make it easy for visitors to send e-mail comments.
