MCPS
licenses the Ultraseek search engine by Verity (formerly
known as Inktomi).
Occasionally, site visitors
notify Web Services that the MCPS search engine is “broken.”
Further troubleshooting determines that they are trying
search the MCPS Web from behind either a corporate or
personal firewall. The MCPS search engine uses the regular
port for Internet browsing.
Users who find themselves blocked in this way should
contact their network administrator.
Note:
A search result of, “No results were found for
your search” is not indicative of a firewall problem.
It means that your search query was not successful.

Search
The MCPS search engine is a
Web crawler that scans Web pages and PDF files, reading
both words on the page and hidden code. Establishing
links to your page is the best way to get listed.
The
more links there are to your page, the higher your
ranking in the search results. In order to get the
best results,
you should make sure your online content includes specific
hidden code called "meta tags." See

About Meta Tags
Optimizing
Web Pages:
Add two tags, "DESCRIPTION" and "KEYWORDS"
into the head content. Your Web-authoring application
should have menu options that allow you to add these
tags. For example, Dreamweaver's menu commands are,
"Insert/Head Tags/Keywords" and "Insert/Head
Tags/Description."
Here is an example of HTML
code:
<head>
<title>MCPS
Board of Education</title>
<meta
name="DESCRIPTION" content="Home page
for the Board of Education for
Montgomery
County, Maryland">
<meta
name="KEYWORDS" content="board of education,
boe, school board, board
members,
board meetings, board agendas, board minutes, student
member of the board,
advisory
committees, distinguished service award, legislation,
legislative positions,
ombudsman">
</head>
Search results will display as follows:
MCPS

Optimizing
PDF Documents:
"TITLE" and "KEYWORD" fields
of a PDF document's "Document Properties"
are used by the search engine to rank results. Acrobat's
menu command is "File/Document Properties/Summary."
Enter keywords separated by commas,
without spaces, like this:
directions
to schools,directions,school locations
Search results display the contents of the title
as the link:

Webmasters may create custom search boxes that will
search a school or office Web site. The example below
is well suited for use with the MCPS Web Template.
It fits nicely in pages that use a side bar because
the
table that encloses it has been set to be 171 pixels
wide. Have
a look at the HTML code. You may copy this HTML
code and paste it into the HTML code view of your
Web
page. The section that you need to change (departments/web)
is highlighted in red. Be sure to change it to your
own directory location.
Webmasters can add an MCPS Search box on their site
even if they are not using the MCPS template. You
can highlight and copy this table onto your page or
grab the HTML
code and paste it into the HTML code
view of your Web page. No changes will be needed since
this search includes the entire MCPS site. It also
includes the link to the Index of Topics.
