Browser Help: How To Override Font Sizes

To override web page coded font sizes, you must adjust the preferences in your web browser to allow you to reset the text size for easier viewing of web pages. This would be most beneficial to those who need large type faces to read content easily.

Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0

  • On the IE browser menu bar, pull down Tools menu. Select Internet Options (bottom of list)
  • A diaglog box opens for Internet Options. Go to the General tab panel, and click on the Accessibility button near the lower right corner of the window.
  • In the Accessibility window, check the box to ignore text font sizes specified on Web pages. Click OK to close Accessibility window.
  • Click OK to close Internet Options window.
  • On the browser menu bar, pull down the View menu.
  • Hover on Text Size and a sub-menu opens. Select the relative size font you need to view the pages comfortably.

Netscape 4.7

  • On the Netscape browser menu menu bar, pull down the Edit menu. Select Preferences at the bottom of the list.
  • A dialog box opens named Preferences. On the left navigation window, click on the + (plus) sign preceding the Appearance item.
  • Under Appearance, you should now see a sub-menu including Fonts. Click on the word Fonts.
  • The right side of the window should offer options relating to fonts. Select readable fonts in the top portion of the window for defaults (usually size 12 or bigger to enhance readability). In the lower portion, select the radio button for Use my default fonts, overriding document-specified fonts. Click OK.
  • You may be comfortable with your defaults. If you wish to “tweak” the size of the font more, go to the menu bar View menu —> Increase Font or Decrease Font. (The keyboard shortcut keys are on the right side next to the command.)
  • Repeat font adjustment until you’re comfortable reading.

Netscape 6.0

  • On the Netscape browser menu menu bar, pull down the Edit menu. Select Preferences at the bottom of the list.
  • A dialog box opens name Preferences. On the left navigation window, turn down the arrow graphic preceding the Appearance item.
  • Under Appearance, you should now see a sub-menu including Fonts. Click on the word Fonts.
  • The right side of the window should offer options relating to fonts. Select readable fonts in the top portion of the window for defaults (usually size 12 or bigger to enhance readability). In the lower portion, select the box for Always use my font settings, overriding web page font. Click OK.
  • You may be comfortable with your defaults. If you wish to “tweak” the size of the font more, go to the menu bar View menu —> Text Size. The text size submenu gives choices to make font smaller or larger, or choose a percentage size change. Repeat font adjustment until you’re comfortable reading.
