Listed below are commonly used publications related to transition planning. These publications are organized according to their source - MCPS, Montgomery County, the State of Maryland, and National.

A. MCPS Publications:

1. Answers to Frequently Asked Questions about Transition Services: A booklet that describes MCPS Transition Services, certificate and diploma requirements, and suggestions on how to guide students, parents and educators on making the diploma/certificate decision.

2. School to Adult Living Transition Services: A brochure that describes the goal of transition services and how these services are implemented in MCPS.

3. Partnership with Business: A brochure that describes how MCPS partners with the business community to provide training and employment opportunities for High School students with disabilities.

4. The Transition Connection: A directory that describes public and private agencies that support students with disabilities and their families.

5. Getting Set, Getting Started, and Getting Ready Booklets

  • Getting Set: A guide for Middle School students and their parents/guardians.
  • Getting Started: A career/college planning guide for 9th grade students.
  • Getting Ready: A career/college planning guide for 11th grade students.

B. County Publications:

1. Disability Network Directory: A directory that lists providers, agencies, businesses, and advocacy organizations provided by Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services, Aging and Disability Services, and the Commission on People with Disabilities.

2. Montgomery County Department of Recreation Guide: A guide that describes county recreation programs.

3. Montgomery County Therapeutic Recreation Guide: A guide that describes recreation programs specifically designed for individuals with disabilities.

C. State Publications:

Transition Planning and Anticipated Services: A comprehensive transition information guide for students, families, and professionals published by the Maryland State Department of Education.

D. National Publications:

1. HEATH Publications: The HEATH Resource Center of The George
Washington University, Graduate School of Education and Human
Development, is the National Clearinghouse on Postsecondary Education for
Individuals with Disabilities.

2. NICHCY: National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities. NICHCY serves as a central source of information on:
- IDEA, the nation's special education law,
- No Child Left Behind (as it relates to children with disabilities), and
- Research-based information on effective educational practices.
