TRANSITION SERVICES
NEXT STEPS: SCHOOL TO ADULT LIVING TRANSITION WORKSHOPS

Five School-to-Adult Living Transition workshops will be offered to students and parents this fall. Programs will address eligibility services available in the community and in the schools, student and parent roles and responsibilities in accessing those eligibility services, and tips to promote a successful transition from MCPS to adult living.  The target audience for each workshop will be families of students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP) ages 14-21, or younger as appropriate, with the designated topic of the evening indicated as an outcome in the Transition Plan. Meeting details are below.

I. Adult Services

Description:  Representatives from state and county agencies and the school system will present information about the Maryland Transitioning Youth Initiative for eligible students with significant disabilities. Local adult agencies will give information regarding the services they provide to eligible graduates.

II. Montgomery College Night

Description:  Representatives from Montgomery College will present an overview of the wide range of programs the college offers.

III. Postsecondary Education Night

Description: School system representatives will share planning tools and resources to assist students transitioning
to postsecondary education.
DATE: November 12, 2009
TIME: 7:00-9:00 P.M.
PLACE: Earle B. Wood Middle School

IV. Integrated Employment and Vocational Training

Description: School system and local representatives will discuss training opportunities, legislation pertinent to employment of individuals with disabilities and supported employment options available to eligible individuals.
DATE: January 27, 2010
TIME: 7:00-9:00 p.m.
PLACE: Earle B. Wood Middle School

V. Independent Living, Community Participation, Continuing and Adult Education

Description: Transportation, independent living options, recreation, leisure programs, continuing and adult education programs, as well as, resources available to enhance the ability of individuals with disabilities to live and participate in their communities will be highlighted.
