School Improvement Requirements

School Improvement in Title I Schools

No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 uses this term to describe schools that have not met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on state assessments in reading and math for at least two consecutive years. A school that is identified as a "school in need of improvement," receives extra help to improve.  Families in Title I schools may transfer students to another identified public school, including a public charter school. Children who attend schools in Year 2 of school improvement may be eligible to receive free tutoring in reading and/or mathematics based on participation in the Free and Reduced Meals System (FARMS) program.  Montgomery County Public Schools will identify any Title I elementary school that fails to make adequate yearly progress for two consecutive years as a school in improvement.
