The following is a
"Dictionary" of Terms that we use. It is here
to help you understand your phone/communication system(s)
and identify your phone/communication system(s).
Centrex: A service
provided on a telephone line that includes intercom,
call forwarding, restricted calling, etc.
Cross
talk: Unrequested conversations from persons
you did not call or who interrupt you conversations.
Dark
Fiber: Installed but not activated fiber through
which no light is transmitted.
Dedicated
line: a unique channel for a constant transmission
from point A to point B.
Demarc:
the demarcation intersection point at which service
from a provider meets the wiring installed for the location
telephone system.
DND:
Do not Disturb
ITCM:
Shortened form for Intercom or station to station dialing
Key:
Any of the buttons on the phone
Keyset:
Another term for a station phone
LCD:
Liquid Crystal Display
MUTE:
Button that disables the microphone on the phone or
the mouthpiece in the handset
Night
Service: Feature sends calls from specified lines
to designated extensions or departments.
Port:
Point of access for data or voice.
POTS
line: Plain old telephone service line. Regular
analog line without features.
SPCL:
Shortened form for special that refers to certain programming
features
SPKR:
Shortened form for Speaker, allows for caller to be
heard without lifting the handset.
Station:
The location ID number for a telephone or keyset.
UPS:
Uninterrupted Power supply. Allows equipment to run
on batteries if the system's electrical current is interrupted.
