MCNPS Technology Grant Information:
Enhancing Education through Technology and Innovative Programs

Teacher and Student Technology Standards

The Montgomery County Public Schools is a partner in two consortiums of school systems in Maryland focusing on technology standards. The first is a consortium developing an assessment tool for teachers on the Maryland Teacher Technology Standards (MTTS). The second is the Technology Literacy by 8th Grade (TL8) consortium which is a state wide consortium developing the Maryland Technology Literacy Standards for Students (MTLSS). Both consortiums are funded through a Technology Education grant from the state.

The MTTS were originally created as part of the PT3 grant to ensure that student teacher candidates had adequate technology skills. The MTTS are now being used by grant consortium members to develop the Maryland Online Technology Assessment for Teachers and Administrators. Additionally, local school systems are also designing activities to support the grant and align with county initiatives.

The work of the TL8 consortium is to develop the Maryland Technology Standards for Students and present them to the state advisory board for approval.

As part of the process of developing the standards, the consortium will also be making recommendations to the advisory board on the definition of technology literacy for students and the process to assess students on the standards.

As a nonpublic institution in the Montgomery County, you may benefit from the work of both consortiums by having access to products and services of these grants. These include having access to the teacher assessment tool, access to professional development plans, information on national best practices on technology literacy, and lessons integrating the standards with the voluntary state curriculum. Although professional development is not listed as a product of the grant, you may also be able to access some professional development opportunities as they become available.
