School psychologists are school-based mental health professionals trained in both psychology and education committed to ensuring that every child learns in a safe, healthy and supportive environment.
School psychologists are uniquely skilled in learning strategies, instructional consultation, collaboration, behavior management, social skill development, motivation systems, psychological assessment and the identification of exceptionalities.
They have the knowledge, skill, and experience to work in partnership with other school staff members and parents and apply psychological, mental health and child development approaches to enhance academic achievement and social-emotional learning.

MCPS school psychologists work in Head Start programs, for special education services and special education schools, in the alternative programs, on the bilingual assessment team, and in the field offices and support general education programs and initiatives.
