Hello, MCPS Students!
Please excuse my tardiness in updating. A lot has happened
since October! I have continued visiting schools, including
Brooke Grove Elementary School, Poolesville High School, Springbrook
High School, and Takoma Park Middle School. I also have continued
to produce and host Unscripted, a student television
show on channel 34 that showcases student opinions on issues
that face our school system.
Recently, I have been offered many exciting new opportunities
to advocate for students at the national level. In February,
I attended a conference where I lobbied local congressmen
and senators on educational issues and federal bills. I have
received offers to speak to students about advocacy and empowerment
from local school boards and universities in Hawaii, Kentucky,
New York State, and Ohio. I am working with the National School
Board Association on creating a national network of student
Board Members to put student representation and access to
education at the forefront of national debate.
I also am working with an organization called Our Education.
Their purpose is to pursue a constitutional amendment making
access to a high quality education a civil right. I encourage
you to go to their website, www.oured.org, and sign their
petition to support education.
As the school year comes to a close, I definitely encourage
you to remain involved with the school board and advocacy.
The next Student Advisory Committee Meeting will be March
22 at 7:00 p.m. in room 127 at the Carver Educational Services
Center, and I hope to get a great turn out. Again, any questions
you have for me can be directed to my email, sebastian_johnson@fc.mcps.k12.md.us,
or you can reach me at 301-270-5788. Thanks for your support,
and I look forward to more timely updates in the future!

Hey MCPS Students!I hope everyone had a very successful first
month of school. During September, I focused on better communications
with students, as promised during my campaign. In keeping
with that promise, I have continued the Student Advisory Committee.
The committee held its first meeting on September 20, and
we discussed general student issues at different schools,
as well as the role the committee would play in student representation.
The next meeting will be held on November 22 from 7:00 to
8:30 pm in Room 127 of CESC. Students interested in serving
on this committee (I am asking for one student from every
high school) should contact the Student Affairs Office (301-279-4957)
or email Karen_L_Crawford@mcpsmd.org and give his/her
name, address, phone, email, school, grade in school for 2005-2006,
and a statement of interest, commitment, and qualifications.
I hope to make school visits a key component of my efforts
to improve communications with students. I am scheduled to
visit Poolesville on November 3, and I have already visited
Matsunaga Elementary School and Kingsview Middle School to
welcome evacuees from Hurricane Katrina to our county and
to encourage students to vote in local SGA elections.
I am excited to announce that the first episode of a new
television show on ITV, channel 34, that I host called Unscripted.
It will be aired during the month of November on Sundays,
Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The episode will include
a student panel discussion on school safety and an interview
with a special guest about military recruitment. Dont
miss it!
I am always happy to answer questions and receive student
input via my email at Sebastian_Johnson@mcpsmd.org or Sebastian_Johnson@fc.mcps.k12.md.us.
I am also available on the SMOB hotline, (301) 270-5788.
Sincerely,
Sebastian Johnson
Hey MCPS students!
Its been quite a month! I was sworn in as your new Student
Member on the Board on July 5, 2005, and on July 6th, I had
my first Board meeting where I voted. At that meeting, we
discussed an exciting new program, the Middle School Magnet
Consortium. The consortium will consist of three middle schools:
Argyle Middle School, Loiderman Middle School, and Parkland
Middle School. Each school will have its own specialty magnet
program that every student in the school can attend. This
program is only in its pilot phase, but we hope it will help
to make a difference with with minority achievement and will
encourage all students to take more rigorous courses. We also
discussed the impending reconstitution of the Citizens Advisory
Committee on Family Life and Human Development. As you may
know, there was some controversy over our revised family life
and human development curriculum, and weve decided to
start again from scratch. Tentatively, the new committee will
have fifteen members, two of whom will be students. One student
will be selected from the Montgomery County Region of the
Maryland Association of Student Councils (MCR), your county-level
student government, and another will be selected out of interested
student applicants. Student in grades 9-12 who are interested
in applying, will be able to send an application (when they
are available) to the Board of Education Office. The Board
will take final action on this topic at their July 27, 2005,
business meeting.
On another note, I am pleased to announce that my new Student
Advisory Committee coordinators will be Sarah Horvitz (Springbrook
High School) and Eric Kay (Wootton High School). They will
be helping me coordinate the representation and participation
of all MCPS high schools in the Student Advisory Committee.
This committee (created by the 26th Student Member of the
Board of Education, Sagar Sanghvi) meets periodically to discuss
student issues before the Board of Education and/or general
student concerns. On occasion, the group is asked to give
feedback to offices and departments in central office concerning
curriculum, displays, guidelines, etc.
Meetings for 2005-2006 are scheduled in room 127, CESC from
7:00-8:30pm on:
Tuesday, September 20, 2005
Tuesday, November 22, 2005
Tuesday, March 28, 2006
Tuesday, May 23, 2006
(additional meetings may be scheduled)
Students interested in serving on this committee (I am asking
for one student from every high school) should contact the
Student Affairs Office (301-279-4957) or email Karen_L_Crawford@mcpsmd.org
and give his/her name, address, phone, email, school, grade
in school for 2005-2006, and a statement of interest, commitment,
and qualifications.
Im excited to begin my work on the Board, and look forward
to hearing from all of you during the school year. My hotline
number is (301) 270-5788 and my email is Sebastian_Johnson@fc.mcps.k12.md.us;
feel free to call or email if you have a question or concern
I can help you with. Have a great summer!
