Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB)

 

FINAL CANDIDATES: On March 5, 2009, 180 students attended the Nominating Convention at Blake High School to narrow the field of five candidates to the final two for the 2009-2010 Student Member of the Board of Education. Pictured below (left to to right) is Jiayi Yang, a junior at Richard Montgomery High School, and Tim Hwang, a junior at Wootton HS.

All MCPS secondary students will have the privilege to vote for the 2009-2010 student member of the Board of Education on April 29, 2009.

On April 29, 2009, at 6:55 p.m., the election for the thirty-second student member of the Board of Education was certified. Timothy Hwang has been elected.

Of the students eligible to vote 63,386 voted. All high schools and middle schools submitted election results. Four alternative programs also participated in the voting.

The vote summary is as follows:

Students registered* 74,854
Students voting 63,386 84.68%

Tim Hwang 35,654 56.49%
Jiayi Yang 27,460 43.51%

272 blank ballots were cast. A blank ballot means that the student exercised his/her right to vote, however, he/she did not vote for either candidate.

*The number of students registered is based on the September 30, 2008, Official Report of Enrollment by Grade and School for high schools and middle schools.
