What is MCR? The Montgomery
County Region (MCR) of the Maryland Association of Student
Councils (MASC) is the high school organization that
has representation from our twenty-five high schools.
MCR meets in general assembly
at least six times a year.
So, what does that mean? At
general assemblies, in addition to guest speakers on
a variety of topics, students discuss and act on issues,
problems, and concerns in the schools, as well as engaging
in countywide activities.
How Many student serve on the
Executive Board? There are four elected officers
and many appointed staff members on the executive board.
In addition, the school's SGA president and their liaison
also serve as voting members on the board.
What is the time commitment for
an executive board member? The executive board meets
in the evenings once a month. Staff must attend all
executive board meetings plus
the eight general assemblies. In addition, the executive
board attends the annual student leaders meeting with
the Board of Education. Additional outside time is required
in order for staff members to meet position requirements.
How do I join MCR? Any interested
student may attend executive board meetings. Also, general
assemblies are open to the entire student body from
each high school Interested students should contact
their SGA advisor to get a permission form. Elections
and application for positions are in the spring.
What other major things does
MCR do? MCR also has the unique opportunity, in
partnership with our Board of Education, to supervise
the election of the Student Member of the Board of Education
(SMOB home web page).
In Montgomery County, the student Board member must
win a spot on a final ballot, actively campaign and
be elected by the majority vote of students in middle
and high school. This unique opportunity in civic education
allows our secondary students to experience the power
of their vote.
MCR Newsletter? MCR publishes
a newsletter at least once a semester. Schools are
invited to submit a school report (see link below)
by the end of the first full week of school in January, then again by the end of May. The MCR newsletter will be sent to all high schools. This is a great opportunity to share
your school's best practices and also get new ideas
from other schools!
