Academic Eligibility

Regulation IQD-RA (High School) and IQD-RB (Middle School) addresses the academic eligibility for students who participate in extracurricular activities. These regulations can be located at MCPS Policies & Regulations. In the middle schools, two weeks after report cards are issued, a student may petition the activity advisor to be reinstated. The final decision rests with the principal. Middle schools may wish to develop a form for students to use as an "application" to be reinstated. Feel free to use this model form (developed at Rocky Hill Middle School) as a sample.

MCPS schools should follow Independent Activity Funds (IAF) procedures (pdf) when collecting cash. The account that should be used may be selected from the 600 through 689 series in the IAF chart of accounts. Schools must ensure they inform the donors of the purpose for which they are contributing. The total amount collected must be the exact total amount paid for the purpose. (SGAs can advertise, for example, that 50% of the profits from a collection will go towards a charity and 50% will go towards SGA leadership programs such as attending a state SGA conference or summer leadership program such as MLW)

Service-learning in Maryland
Service-learning is a teaching method that combines meaningful service to the community with curriculum-based learning. Students improve their academic skills by applying what they learn in school to the real world; they then reflect on their experience to reinforce the link between their service and their learning.

There are a lot of service learning projects on the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Service Learning web site. Several links are listed below as the project ideas are in several places.
