Montgomery County Public School Students and Schools
On May 12, 2008 two Montgomery County Public Schools seniors were recognized by the Maryland State Department of Education as Service Stars.Ms.Margaret Ellen Johnson, Magruder High School, was recognized for her service locally, nationally and internationally through direct, indirect, and advocacy actions with nonprofit organizations. Mr. Keith Stakes, Walter Johnson High School was recognized for his direct, indirect and advocacy actions associated with the Bethesda Chevy Chase Rescue Squad and other community organizations. We salute these and all other MCPS students who are serving the community needs and learning valuable skills.
On April 29, 2008 three Montgomery County Public Schools were recognized for their exceptional service to the community. Staff, students, and parents from Bannockburn Elementary, John Poole Middle School, and Walter Johnson High School were present to accept the awards for their schools.
Bannockburn Elementary School of Bethesda was recognized for service provided to the community every month this past year. Service activities included: making sandwiches for the men in the Montgomery County Emergency Shelter, collecting food items for the Montgomery County food bank, participating in Help the Homeless mini walks, collecting money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and preparing tote bags for patients at the Children’s Inn at National Institutes of Health.
John Poole Middle School of Poolesville has held service projects organized by the student service learning coordinator, teachers, and club sponsors. Student-led clubs have played a major role in the school-wide projects. Support has focused on the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, local families in need of holiday meals, and reaching out to children in the Shady Grove Hospital.
Walter Johnson High School of Bethesda held service projects promoted by school-sponsored clubs and organizations. Students, staff and students supported local and global projects They held clothing drives for Ghana, addressed atrocities in Darfur and global hunger, built homes for low-income Marylanders, provided blood drives for local hospitals, and served at local soup kitchens. The student government association and the leadership class raised $10,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through innovative student focused games.
