Welcome to the Division of
School Based Special Education Services pages. In
the system wide endeavor to ensure success for every
student,
this division is responsible for planning, developing,
coordinating and implementing a continuum of services
and programs for over 17,000 students with a wide
range of disabilities, and for ensuring that students
with
disabilities are educated in the least restrictive
environment (LRE) in 190 schools throughout the county.
One
of the major functions of the Division is to ensure
that students with disabilities achieve the goals
of the MCPS Program of Studies and the Call to
Action plan in the least restrictive environment.
To this
end, staff works closely with the Office of School
Performance (OSP) and the Department of Facilities
Management to expand the range of special education
services in each high school cluster and to create
more comprehensive, cohesive programs and services
for all students. The special education supervisors
have worked closely with OSP and Facilities Management
staff to expand special education programs and
services that will allow more students to be served
in their
home high school cluster.
The Division staff provide
technical support, consultation, and training to
assist schools in meeting the requirements
of federal laws, state regulations, and Board
policies related to students with disabilities. Special
emphasis is given to assisting general and special
education
staff with providing effective instructional
strategies
and techniques to implement the MCPS Program
of Studies and the Success for Every Student Plan
through the
delivery of unified and efficient services to
students
with disabilities. Division staff also provide
technical assistance to local school IEP team
meetings in which
disability coding and program decisions are made
and maintain active outreach and collaboration
efforts
with parents, and with federal, state and community
agencies and professional organizations.
