In response to many parent and
school requests, the Maryland State Department of Education
has developed a common Maryland State IEP. If families
move from county to county in Maryland, the
IEP paperwork
will be the same, resulting in better services for
students. Individual counties are allowed to implement
this State IEP in a variety of ways using different
tools. To address this new IEP, MCPS has purchased
the Encore system from Spectrum Schools Solutions
in Towson,
Maryland. Encore will use the State IEP form, but in
addition, Encore can bring together information from
several MCPS databases. This coordination of student
information in one central database results in better
service to parents and students.
The
Department of Special Education Operations has conducted
training to Special Education staff from schools and
offices. Schools and offices were trained in teams
to help support the transition from a paper IEP to
an electronic IEP. In addition, over 280 school
principals and assistant principals have been trained
to enable them to be more involved in the Special Education
process at their school. Other
school staff will be offered training, including: Special
Education paraeducators, School Secretaries, and Guidance
Counselors. Future training plans may include general
education staff working with Special Education students.
As with any computer application, the MCPS Help Desk
at 301-517-5800 is ready to help new users with any
issues.
