Office of Shared Accountability Reports

Evaluation of the Howard Hughes Science Grant Initiative, Year Two

Description:

The Office of Shared Accountability in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is conducting a multiyear evaluation of the implementation and outcomes of a science professional development (PD) initiative at the elementary school level. The implementation and evaluation of this three-year program (2013-2014 through 2015-2016) are supported by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI).This report describes the outcomes of the training and support for Cohort 1 during the 2014−2015 school year obtained through a follow-up survey. Additionally, this report addresses the implementation of the summer PD for Cohort 2 through feedback from pre- and post-training surveys.

Recommendations:

  • Explore ways to increase participation in summer professional development.
  • Encourage more participants to share their new skills and knowledge with other teachers beyond their grade levels at their schools.
  • Continue to explore ways to further expand the knowledge of practices and the skills for implementing lesson seeds using the practices. Especially focus on practices with lower knowledge and comfort ratings from the PD surveys.
  • Continue to support participants in their skill development by offering online resources and specific examples and suggestions for implementing practices.
