Annual Mandatory Compliance Training

Dear Colleagues:

Montgomery County Public Schools is committed to providing a safe and welcoming learning and working environment for students and staff across our district. To fulfill this commitment, all staff are required to complete the annual Districtwide Compliance Training for the 2018-2019 school year. This training is designed to ensure that every employee has the necessary information to establish and maintain a positive, safe, healthy and lawful climate and culture in which all adults and students are able to thrive and do their best work.

The mandatory training consists of multiple online modules designed to be completed within one-half day. Topics include: preventing, recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect; equal opportunity in the workplace; bullying, harassment and intimidation prevention; religious diversity; ethics; conflict of interest; and other important issues.

While some of these modules may seem familiar, many have been modified for the upcoming school year in response to survey feedback from a large number of randomly selected staff members representing multiple job classifications. In addition, some content has been revised based on changes in federal, state and local compliance requirements. Each module is designed to be interactive and engaging, and includes a brief assessment of the participant’s mastery of critical content, as well as multiple resources.

Additionally, based on your MCPS position, you may be required to complete job-specific trainings that are separate and in addition to the districtwide compliance modules. Your principal or supervisor will notify you of these requirements.

The requirement by employee associations is as follows:

  • Service Employees International Union (SEIU): All 10-month and overtime-eligible 12-month SEIU unit members must complete the training during their normal duty hours. Unit members may not take this training, even voluntarily, outside of their normal duty hours. For the schedule with required completion dates, click here.

These three groups will access the mandatory training online, available beginning July 2, 2018:

  • Montgomery County Association of Administrators and Principals (MCAAP) staff;
  • Montgomery County Business and Operations Administrators (MCBOA) staff;
  • Montgomery County Education Association (MCEA) staff (excluding substitute teachers*) must complete the training on Teacher Professional Learning Salary Day 1

*Returning substitute teachers must complete the training during their normal duty day and will receive further information from the Substitute Teacher Office (by July 1).

For directions for MCAAP, MCBOA and MCEA staff to access the online training beginning July 2, click here.

For the schedule with required completion dates for permanent and temporary/substitute employees click HERE.

Failure to complete the required training will result in progressive disciplinary action. In addition, school-based staff will not be permitted to work with students until they complete the training. In these rare cases, the Office of Employee Engagement and Labor Relations and the Office of Learning, Achievement and Administration will work directly with principals and supervisors to determine specific actions to be taken, up to and including unpaid suspension from work and recommendation for termination.
